Abstract
This page presents a working hypothesis about the Sanskrit varṇamālā as a three-dimensional coordinate system. The first two dimensions are standard phonetics: how a sound is released, and where in the mouth or vocal tract it is produced. The proposed third dimension asks whether root meanings cluster along a visible movement from outward action or quality, experienced as farther from self, toward carrying, holding, bending inward, binding, relation, speech, thought, memory, measure, and self-reference.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is not that a single letter mechanically creates a fixed meaning. The stronger hypothesis is testable and more modest: when Sanskrit roots are placed on the traditional phonetic grid, and then compared with Indo-European evidence where possible, semantic families may appear in patterned regions of the grid. The upper-left area often carries outward actions or qualities such as cutting, moving, heating, stretching, striking, and visible force; the lower-right and later columns often carry resonance, retention, relation, embodiment, cognition, and inwardness.
How to Read the Chart
Read X from left to right as the release axis: voiceless stops, aspiration, voicing, breathy voicing, nasality, semivowels, and fricative or breath-shaped sounds. Read Y from top to bottom as the anatomical source axis: velar, palatal, retroflex, dental, and labial. Read Z as the proposed semantic-depth axis. One end carries action or quality moving outward, away from the self; the other end carries holding, bending inward, relation, cognition, and self-reference. The green-to-red tile calculation makes that movement visible before the viewer reads the detailed evidence.
Examples
Nāśa is useful because √naś points to perishing, being lost, and ceasing to exist near the nasal/settling side of the field. Its inwardness is not merely emotional; it can be read as disappearance from the visible or shared field, with the particle-or-wave image used only as an analogy for leaving the observable frame. Namas is useful because √nam means bending or bowing, an action that turns inward rather than merely moving outside. Krodha can be read as an interpretive fit after morphology is respected: agitation, heat, or disturbance becomes held anger inside the person. These examples show why the Z-axis is better described as outward-to-inward movement, not simply surface impact or release.
Tests and Controls
Each letter card should be judged by roots, morphology, and sound laws, not by visual similarity alone. Strong cells such as √gam, √jan, √dā, √dhā, √nah, √sad, √bhṛ, √man, and √vah can be compared against Indo-European material. Weak or structural cells, especially retroflex initials, voiceless aspirates, and conditioned nasals, are deliberately marked as low-confidence or structural so that the model does not force evidence into empty coordinates.
Research Boundary
Counterexamples matter. A left-side sound can still contain inward action, as with drinking, cooking, bearing, or ripening. A right-side or lower sound can still preserve outward force. Therefore the model is best understood as a vector field, not a rigid alphabet code. It invites testing: add more roots, mark confidence, separate Sanskrit-only evidence from secure Indo-European comparison, and see whether the semantic clustering survives.
